As you know Cross Country are sponsors of the prestigious Bridgestone Club Challenge, the recent elimination rounds were based at Hanati Chalets in the Dinokeng reserve roughly 35 km north of pretoria in the Hammanskraal / Rust de Winter district.
The day was an apetiser for more as Dinokeng is really unexplored terrain and offers big 5 viewing on our doorstep, the trip takes around 90 minutes from Johannesburg and we set off early one morning to see another facility near the main gate, what’s great is the fact that this is a malaria free area accesible by the N1 and a good tarred road.
We popped into Mongena Game Lodge and enjoyed sandwiches and coffee followed by a guided tour of the facility, day visitors are welcome and game drives can be arranged for groups of four or more.
The facility is immaculately maintaned with very helpful staff . Abush experience is guaranteed with sightings of numerous species recorded on a daily basis, one can find solitude simply sitting on the deck overlooking the dam.
After a long day one can relax at the Tshukudu Bar at the main lodge prior to trying the Kinfisher Restaurant – sleep will follow in one of the tastefully decorated rooms.
Mongena is named after the Boekenhout tree indigenous to the area, unique offerings include a state of the art conference centre, a wedding chapel and the ability to offer team builds in the bush. In November they will celebrate National Birding Big Day organised by the Witwatersrand Bird Club, they will target 200 species and the beneficiaries will be Birdlife SA;s conservation programme.
