The town of Colenso was established in 1855 as a stop over between Durban and the Free State. Situated on the banks of the Tugela river it later became a rail hub as the track was laid and the Bulwer bridge was constructed over the Tugela by army engineers. The town is no longer on the main Durban/Johannesburg road route but is still worth a visit, numerous Anglo Boer war battle sites abound nearby.
Stoney Ridge is a short distance from Colenso on the road to Weenen in the south, in fact the Weenen Game Reserve is worth a visit. Situated within a diverse landscape of thorn veld, rocky mountains and open grassland. The farm is large with a good deal of game often viewed when driving around. One can camp or take a tent in the rustic bush camp which is fully catered in the most mouth watering fashion.
There are about 200km of 4×4 trails on the property ranging in difficulty; the small track opposite the main boma can however keep a group busy for hours. The owner/operator John Rich is widely thought of as one of the top off-road driving instructors in the country.
Stoney Ridge has over the years often been rated by publications and pundits as one of the top-ten facilities in South Africa. The full English breakfast on offer as well as the evening meals will start and end the day on a high note, that’s if you can move afterwards. The trails are natural and feature some well known” tough” spots in addition they offer specialised tuition in just about every possible off-road discipline, in fact one can spend a full weekend on advanced recovery and return home pleasantly surprised at the things you have learnt.
