Adventure brief

This four day Mountain adventure traverses the Lesotho Mountain Kingdom, with the ultimate goal of ascending one of the most remote, roughest and impassable passes in the country – Baboons Pass. This “road” is more suitable for our four legged friends, at least more so than for regular vehicles. Being amongst one of the highest mountain passes of Lesotho, this beast is not to be taken lightly!

Baboons Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.689m above sea level, located in the Maseru District of Lesotho. This pass near Ramabanta has been attempted many times before, but not all succeed due to vehicle damage and sometimes rapid weather changes.

The road to the summit is not for the faint hearted, and deemed extreme. Only 4×4’s with high clearance and Low Range will be allowed on this Adventure. Be prepared to put in some work to cover the 26km of the toughest terrain in Southern Africa, climbing up from an altitude of 1.200m to 2.689m. This is a hectic gravel pass which consists of huge rocks and the road base only exists to create large ‘potholes’ for even more extreme conditions.

It’s a real challenging route and a true test of your vehicle and your stamina because the road abounds in twists and turns with wheels sometimes hanging above the precipice. With many hours of road building required for safe passage.

Our Adventure allows for two days to cover the Pass, and we will be sleeping on the Pass. The exact location may vary, as this is decided by our progress.

Day 1

Our group of adventurers will meet at a pre-determined gathering point, early morning on the 13th, from where we will travel in convoy towards the Maseru border post. Once through the border post, we will carry on towards our first nights’ accommodation, being a lodge located at the foothills of Baboons Pass.

Day 2

After an early start, and breakfast, the group will gather in anticipation of the Beast that awaits. Last minute preparations, and a quick brief later, we will head out to the start of Baboons. Thus beginning our epic adventure in all earnest. Being a group, as well as the fact that we allow ourselves two days to conquer this monster, our pace will be leisurely on our ascent. This will allow us to take in our surroundings, and allow everyone to slowly and carefully negotiate all the obstacles. Once a suitable spot is reached, we will break for lunch, which will be prepared and served accordingly. After lunch we aim to push further until late afternoon, where again a suitable area will be chosen to camp on the pass. We will erect a bush shower to wash off our tired bodies, after which dinner will be prepared and served.

Day 3

Again rising early, breakfast and coffee will be served, and our journey continues up the pass. Depending our progress, we will be having lunch again on the upper regions of the pass. Our aim will be to be finished, cresting the top of the pass by mid-afternoon. Once back on the main road, we will head to our overnight destination, where a hot shower, and hopefully many cold drinks awaits us to revel in our success.

Day 4

Today we are allowed a bit more leisurely pace, and after breakfast, we head back to the border post in convey. After passing through and border formalities completed, vehicles can be pointed home-bound, with the knowledge that the Beast – Baboons Pass – was slayed.

This adventure is only for experienced off-road drivers and vehicles with low-range and good ground clearance. Space is limited to 6 vehicles on this trip so get your bookings in early to avoid disappointment.
