On a Clear Day You Can See Forever

Many years ago I visited the Harties Cableway at the Hartbeespoort Dam and turned around at the site of the flimsy little cars,my more recent visit actually astounded me , it is really a world class facility and a delight to young and old.

And it’s true on a clear day the views of the dam and surrounding mountains are amazing, unfortunately we were faced with a mid morning haze but the views were still astounding. The main building houses a ticket kiosk, a curio and biltong shop and a very nice restaurant where pictures reveal the history of the cable car.

Access to the cars is well controlled and the cars themselves are very comfortable housing four adults or a family of five .

The trip to the top takes around five minutes,or so it seemed and offers lovely views of the bush and rock formations.

On top there are a variety of things to do , with kids you can walk the Dassie Route or simply enjoy the view at one of the covered seating areas. Parents can also relax while the little one’s entertain themselves on the KidZone. One can choose from a variety of food options or simply order take-aways at the express zone. Use the cable way as a hub to explore all the other activities around the dam, there is so much to see and do that one could actually make a weekend of it!

The cable way is open seven days a week and the ticket office opens at 08h30, first rides commence at 09h00 and weather permitting the last car will come down at 16h45. As you leave you can purchase a memento either at the “Little Shop at the Top” or at the curio shop at the base station. Check the website www.hartiescableway.co.za for more information , if you feel more adventurous you can contact them to find out more about the adventure activities on offer , such as abseiling, paragliding and hiking. For corporates there is also a large conference centre !

In true all terrain fashion this is a great spot for a family outing or simply to visit with a partner. Tell us your stories at www.allterrain.co.za
